Most of the farmers around these parts put little stock in the predictions and prognostications of some groundhog but I'll be watching Gobbler's Knob back in Pennsylvania to see what Punxsutawney Phil says is still in store for us. If you're at all curious about what goes on there, visit Phil's website. It's at: http://www.punxsutawneyphil.com or rush out to the closest video rental place and get "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murry and Andie McDowell. As beautiful as Winter is here in Saint Augustine, I'm looking forward to Spring, but all the ice fishermen in the area are keeping their fingers crossed that Winter will hang around for a bit longer. There is always the chance that, given one just one more opportunity to get out on the ice, they'll finally catch the one that got away.
Larry, the man who plows our streets, has been doing a fantastic job of keeping the streets in the village cleared. He must get awfully cold up there on that tractor while he's working. Just in case nobody remembers to tell him what a great job he has been doing, here it is. "Larry, you're doing a wonderful job! Many, many thanks!" Bet Spring can't come soon enough for you either.
Couples are pondering what to buy or make for their beloved for Valentine's Day. For the really romantic, there's no need to wait for a particular day to celebrate. I spotted one adoring fellow making a snow angel the other day in his back yard so his Sweetie could see it each time she looked out her kitchen window. Ah yes, romance is alive and well in Saint Augustine, IL.
Kids in school are learning about our presidents and looking forward to having the day off for President's Day. George Washington is a bit remote, but Abraham Lincoln is very real to area school children because there are a number of local sites where it is reported that he visited, spoke, or even debated. After all, Illinois is the "Land of Lincoln." |

Who We Are:
We are a small community -- about 150 people --located in West Central Illinois. Some of us are farmers, some factory workers (who commute to Galesburg, IL), some bankers, some waitresses or waiters and bartenders, some school children and colllege students, and some retirees.
Not too much commerce or industry within the confines of the city limits though. We do have a lumber supply store and a restaurant called "Club 41" because it's located right out there on IL Highway 41. We have a town hall, a Post Office, a fire station, and two churches too. But, we have no convenience store or video rental shops, no gas stations, and no plazas or malls either to ruin our lovely village with acres of blacktop.
All in all, we have the best little village east of the Mississippi! |

What's Happening Here?
Seed catalogs have been arriving in the post office boxes lately, and folks are trying to decide what and how much to plant in their kitchen gardens. Same for flower seeds. Which ones will attract the butterflies and humming birds? Which ones will provide the best cut flowers for in the house? |
